The Indian government's initiative to set up fast-track special courts (FTSC) for sex crimes is facing significant setbacks. Initially aiming to establish 2,600 such courts by 2026, the target has now been revised to 790 due to low state interest and lack of judges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government moved to establish fast-track special courts (FTSC) in 2019 to try exclusively sex crimes, after the Supreme Court that year criticised state governments for being slow to deliver justice to victims.

The initial plan projected the creation of 2,600 Fast Track Special Courts by 2026 but due to insufficient interest from states and a shortage of judges, the target has been reduced to 790
