A Senate committee voted Thursday to advance Linda McMahon's nomination to serve as President Donald Trump's education secretary, bringing her closer to leading an agency the Republican president wants to shut down.

The Republican Senate committee chair said McMahon laid out a “strong vision,” but Democrats said they couldn’t support someone who would dismantle the Education Department.

McMahon, who led Trump’s Small Business Administration during his first term, was approved in a party-line vote by all 12 Republicans on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions
