A Qantas Airways plane bound for Brisbane suffered an engine failure after takeoff on Friday and circled for a short period of time before returning safely to Sydney Airport, the Australian airline said.

Pieces of metal have been found near a runway after a Qantas flight suffered engine failure last week. Brisbane-bound QF520 made an emergency landing at Sydney Airport on Friday afternoon after it experienced “contained engine failure”. Passengers on-board the flight reported hearing a loud bang.

Qantas said in a statement on Friday that there had been a "contained engine failure" on the Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
