Florida Celebrating Record Nesting Year For Endangered Sea Turtle Species
The smallest and most endangered sea turtle in the world is setting records in Florida. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), 2024 was a banner year for Kemp’s ridley nests in the state, with 24 already confirmed for the season compared to a total of 10 in 2023 and just eight in 2022.
Rehabbed endangered sea turtles being released back into the wild
Phineas, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, was found in July 26 in Bridgeport with a fishing hook embedded in its esophagus. A fisher and Bridgeport Animal Control helped in the rescue and transportation to Mystic Aquarium. Veterinary teams were able to remove the hook and treat an infection. They said Phineas has since made a full recovery.
