The Semeru volcano, on Java’s biggest mountain, erupted on Wednesday. A 5.5km column of ash spewed upward from the volcano and has been raining down on nearby villages, Sunrise reports. The Bureau of Meteorology has since issued a red aviation alert and Sunrise reports travellers could encounter issues with flights in the coming hours.
