Twenty-seven girls are still missing in Texas after a storm unleashed nearly a foot (0.3 meters) of rain on Friday and sent floodwaters gushing out of the Guadalupe River through the hilly region known for its century-old summer camps.

In Kerr County, which has been the most impacted, at least 43 people are dead and 27 children remain missing tonight after floodwaters swept through Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. The statewide death toll thus far stands at 51 people. The number of deaths blamed on the flooding in Texas has risen to 51 tonight.

Authorities say more than 20 girls are still unaccounted for at Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas, where the Guadalupe River rose more than 20 feet in less than two hours during torrential rains that triggered flash flooding in parts of the state.
