As blue state governors and lawmakers propose making their states more costly places to live and work, their red state counterparts are seeking to do the opposite.

The Big Ten released its weekly award list for Week 11 of the regular season and two teams split the awards. Minnesota’s Dawson Garcia was named Player of the Week and Maryland’s Derik Queen was named Freshman of the Week.

Outside shooting was a major problem last season for Maryland. The Terrapins shot an abysmal 29% from 3-point range on their way to a losing season. Improvement in that department is one reason why Maryland is in much better shape in 2024-25.

Sarah Te-Biasu scored 20 points, Kaylene Smikle added 17 and No. 14 Maryland held off Penn State’s second-half rally to earn an 82-73 victory. Maryland (17-4, 7-3 Big Ten Conference) entered on a three-game losing streak — all to top-15 teams.

Duke’s Cooper Flagg is the obvious No. 1 pick. He’s lived up to the hype during his freshman year with the Blue Devils, and will be expected to be an All-NBA player by the time he reaches his prime. Behind Flagg, there are a number of prospects who have a pathway to NBA stardom but also have scary downside scenarios if they don’t hit.

After the Michigan State basketball team won their 13th straight game, it marks a first for Tom Izzo in his 30 years with the program.
