Hurricane Helene’s devastating toll kept climbing Sunday as search and rescue teams, combing through the wreckage of splintered homes and wind-tossed vehicles, counted at least 93 storm-related deaths across five states.

The U.S. Southeast grappled Sunday with rising death tolls, a lack of vital supplies in isolated, flood-stricken areas and the widespread loss of homes and property while the devastating toll of Hurricane Helene became more clear and officials warned of a lengthy and difficult rebuild.

The death toll from Helene climbed as emergency responders rushed to rescue residents in small mountain towns that have been cut off from communication.
