Fire crews are starting to get the upper hand on a wildfire in Central Oregon that exploded in size, fueled by dry conditions and hot temperatures. The Cram Fire has grown to be the largest of nearly 100 active fires in the United States.

The Butte Creek fire, burning 30 miles northwest of Madras, also started Friday, this one on the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation. It has grown to 2,000 acres and is 5% contained, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. No homes have been burned.

The Cram fire burning in central Oregon is the largest wildfire in the nation as the Pacific Northwest sees an active start to the fire season. Why it matters: Thousands of acres have already been scorched and dozens of homes destroyed.
