Interstate 40 is impassable between Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina, and beyond, because of catastrophic floods from the remnants of Hurricane Helene. A mudslide and flooding have shut down the route.

A portion of a major interstate that connects western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee was washed out during catastrophic flooding from Helene, with officials unsure when the highway will reopen.

The route between North Carolina and Tennessee has become quite a bit more complicated with the closure of part of I-40 near the state line.
