A weekend fire that sent a massive plume of dark smoke into the Georgia sky has led to complaints about a strong chemical smell and haze several miles away across metro Atlanta, where some schools canceled outdoor activities and residents living near the fire sheltered at home.

People in the northern part of Rockdale County were ordered to evacuate and others were told to shelter in place with windows and doors closed.

More than 90,000 residents in Conyers were told to keep sheltering in place Monday and businesses were told to stay closed after a chemical plant fire.
