PARIS (Reuters) -French Finance Minister Eric Lombard suggested on Tuesday there was a risk the IMF would have to intervene in the economy if Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's minority government falls next month.

European shares dropped on Tuesday, led by losses in France as political uncertainty deepened in the country, while mounting concerns over the U.S. Federal Reserve's independence curbed appetite for riskier assets globally.

London (UKX) -0.65% to 9,263. Germany (DAX:IND) -0.87% to 24,062. France (CAC:IND) -2.21% to 7,669, extending the previous session’s drop as political turmoil deepened after Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called a September 8 confidence vote that could topple the government.

France summoned the American Ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, late Sunday over a letter he sent to President Emmanuel Macron, accusing the French government of failing to confront rising anti-Semitism.

France strongly rejected the “unacceptable” allegations in Kushner’s letter, which the ministry said “fall short of the quality of the transatlantic relationship” between the US and France.

Charles Kushner, the US ambassador to France, sent his deputy to receive a dressing-down after he sparked the French government’s ire with an editorial that accused President Emmanuel Macron of not doing enough to fight antisemitism.
