The clock is ticking toward a September 30 deadline to fund the government, and even with a possible deal to avert a lapse in funding, parts of the US government will start the behind-the-scenes process of preparing for a potential shutdown.

House leaders unveiled on Sunday their new legislation to avert a shutdown at the end of the month and fund the government until Dec. 20.

House GOP leaders on Sunday unveiled a plan to keep the government funded for three months after Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) opening gambit to avoid a shutdown failed due to opposition from Republicans.

The House is expected to vote on the funding extension, known as a continuing resolution or CR, on Wednesday. The Senate will take it up shortly thereafter in time to avoid a shutdown. It is expected to pass both chambers and be signed by President Joe Biden.

Congress enters its final scheduled week of work before the November elections with a plan to avoid a government shutdown next month but only a few days left on the calendar to get it passed.

The three-month continuation legislation does not include the immigration-related measure GOP candidate Donald Trump demanded.
