Salt spreaders were deployed Friday morning in the Chicago area ahead of widespread snowfall. Snowfall is expected to ramp up during the Friday morning rush. Slick roads and dangerous driving conditions are expected to impact commuters.

Snow from a winter weather system in the southern part of the U.S. had moved into the Chicago area early Friday morning, with some parts expected to see a slippery rush hour commute, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

Snow develops after midnight and slows down the morning rush Friday. Accumulating snow lingers until early afternoon Friday. The best timeframe for snow is 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. Snow totals range from a half-inch in far northwest areas to 3 inches to the southeast into northwest Indiana.

Expect impacts to the Friday commutes, especially morning and midday travel. Locations along and south/east of I-55 will likely see the highest snow totals in the 1-3" range. Areas north and west of I-55 will only see a dusting to an inch.
