Democratic Republic of the Congo - January 29, 2025 The United Nations has warned of a critical 24-hour period in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as fighting between the army and M23 rebels intensifies. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the serious violations of human rights, the attacks on displaced persons, and the increase in ethnic violence. Goma's hospitals are overwhelmed, corpses lie in the streets and the infrastructure has collapsed, with cuts to electricity, water and internet services. The UN has also expressed deep concern about the increase in sexual violence and attacks on health workers.
