The Shema is the Jewish declaration of faith. It's from Deuteronomy 6:4, and means, "Listen, Israel, God is our Lord, God is one." It's an acknowledgment that God runs the world. You're supposed to meditate on its meaning twice a day, in the morning and evening, and teach it to your children when they first learn to speak. It's also supposed to be your last words.
