The keel-billed toucan is easy to recognize throughout the forests of Central and South America thanks to its massive, colorful bill. You might expect that bill, which can grow to nearly six inches in length, to weigh a ton but it is actually quite light. That’s because it is no more than hollow bone covered in a hard protein called keratin.
